Srinagar, Aug 8: The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra will remain suspended from both traditional routes with effect from Aug 9 in view of ongoing restoration and maintenance works on vulnerable stretches of the Yatra tracks and the forecast of adverse weather conditions over the coming days, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg said on Saturday.
According to the Divisional Commissioner, the 57-day annual pilgrimage commenced on July 3 and is scheduled to culminate with the traditional Chadi Mubarak ceremony on Aug 28.
The Yatra began simultaneously from the two traditional routes — the Chandanwari track in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district and Baltal in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Garg said more than 4.8 lakh pilgrims have so far performed Darshan at the Holy Shrine.
However, following recent rains, the need for repair and maintenance of vulnerable portions of the Yatra tracks has necessitated restoration work, which is being undertaken by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
He said adverse weather conditions have also been forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) over the next few days. In view of these circumstances, the Yatra will remain suspended from both routes from Aug 9.
The Divisional Commissioner clarified that the traditional Chadi Mubarak ceremony will proceed through the Pahalgam route and mark the culmination of the 2026 Yatra on Aug 28.
Garg appealed to all pilgrims to strictly follow advisories issued by the competent authorities from time to time, emphasising that adherence to the safety measures is essential for the safe and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. [KNT]
