Faizan Punjabi

Kashmir is universally celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, snow-capped mountains, and serene valleys. Yet, beneath this picturesque beauty lies a profound and escalating crisis that rarely commands the sustained attention it demands: the alarming surge in road accidents. What was once considered an unfortunate byproduct of rugged terrain has now evolved into a silent epidemic, turning everyday commutes into perilous journeys. A Crisis of Numbers and Human CostStatistics paint a chilling picture of the reality on Kashmir’s roads. Official records indicate thousands of accidents annually across Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries. Many survivors are left with lifelong physical disabilities. However, these figures do not merely represent data points; they represent shattered families. Every fatal crash translates to a lost breadwinner, a grieving parent, or a child robbed of a future. The emotional trauma experienced by survivors and families lingers long after the headlines fade, compounding the economic strain through mounting hospital bills and lost household income.Reckless Driving and Behavioral Deficits: Human error remains a primary driver of mishaps. Overspeeding, aggressive and unsafe overtaking, mobile phone distraction, and a casual attitude toward seatbelts and helmets are deeply concerning.Underage Driving: A worrying trend across towns and rural areas is the rise of underage driving. Minors often pilot two-wheelers and cars at high speeds without proper training or protective gear, heavily enabled by parental oversight lapses.Infrastructure and Vehicle Deficiencies: Potholes, unlit stretches, poorly designed U-turns, and a lack of crash barriers or proper road signage turn minor errors into fatal catastrophes. Furthermore, the operation of poorly maintained or overloaded vehicles adds mechanical failure to the mix. The growing frequency of road accidents is not an unavoidable fate; it is a preventable public health crisis. Protecting human life requires immediate, coordinated action from both governance structures and civil society. The valleys of Kashmir deserve a future where their roads connect communities in safety and prosperity, rather than serving as paths to tragedy.
