TV show turns into a wrestling ring in Pakistan
29 September 2023: Shaharbeen Times: A recent political talk show on a private television channel in Pakistan witnessed an unprecedented escalation, resembling a wrestling ring rather than a platform for debate, as leader from Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) engaged in a physical altercation.
Imran Khan’s lawyer, Sher Afzal Khan Marwat, and PML-N Senator Dr. Afnan Ullah Khan, were embroiled in a heated argument that rapidly escalated into a physical confrontation, involving slaps and punches. The incident was confirmed by both leaders and shared on microblogging website X.
Dr. Afnan Ullah Khan expressed his perspective on X, stating that he does not condone violence but asserted that he is a staunch supporter of Nawaz Sharif. He emphasized that the incident serves as a strong message to PTI and Imran Khan.
On the other hand, Marwat disputed the account of the incident, accusing the TV show host of spreading misinformation. He plans to initiate a defamation case and criminal complaint against the senator.
This is not an isolated event, as such confrontations have occurred before on talk shows. In 2021, a similar incident involved former PPP lawmaker Abdul Qadir Mandokhel and Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, then associated with PTI and now with Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP). Such incidents raise concerns about the decorum and professionalism expected in political discussions on televised platforms.
