Srinagar, Aug 28 : Authorities on Thursday asked people in Kashmir not to panic over the rise in water levels, stressing that the situation is under control and the administration remains fully geared to tackle any eventuality.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, while briefing reporters in Srinagar, said the Jhelum and its tributaries were being closely monitored and the water level had already started to decline at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh. “There has been no breach in any embankment in the last two days despite the river touching higher levels,” he said.
He said that Army, Police, SDRF, and civil administration teams were on the ground, working in close coordination to ensure public safety. More than 150 sensitive spots are being monitored, while flood control authorities are keeping a strict vigil.
The Divisional Commissioner pointed out that the administration is maintaining round-the-clock preparedness. He said that emergency helplines are functional, while the SDRF and NDRF have been positioned at vulnerable points. Issues related to mobile connectivity, he added, are being addressed with telecom service providers on the instructions of the Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor.
According to Garg, the public response in the past few days has been commendable, with people showing patience despite the anxiety caused by heavy rains. He added that strict action is being taken against illegal sand mining activities that weaken embankments.
While acknowledging that the ongoing fortnight remains critical due to the monsoon season extending till mid-September, Garg underlined that weather forecasts will be shared regularly and appealed to people to follow advisories issued by the authorities.
“Water levels are receding, the administration is alert, and there is no need for panic,” Garg concluded, reassuring people that every necessary step is being taken to safeguard lives and property. [KNT]
