Srinagar, July 4 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday emphasized the centrality of agriculture to Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, culture, and identity, stating that the sector must evolve to meet future challenges—and that evolution rests in the hands of the region’s young scientists and graduates.

Speaking at the 6th Convocation of SKUAST-K (Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology), Omar noted that over 70% of the population is directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture, making it vital to the region’s prosperity and self-reliance.

He credited the university for its contribution to high-altitude farming, temperate horticulture, animal husbandry, and organic agriculture, while praising the graduates as “problem solvers at the grassroots” rather than mere degree holders.

Acknowledging emerging challenges such as climate change, land degradation, and shifting market dynamics, the Chief Minister stressed the need for innovation and adaptation. “The agriculture of yesterday cannot solve the problems of tomorrow,” he said.

Highlighting reforms, Omar said the government has launched a Rs 5,000 crore holistic agriculture development program that integrates science, finance, and governance. The initiative supports 29 major projects across sectors like high-density apple orchards, saffron revival, sheep husbandry, and modern agri-business models.

He urged graduates to seize the opportunities being created, including support for hundreds of start-ups in food processing, agri-tech, and horticulture. “If you come with ideas, we are ready to back you,” he assured.

Calling the graduates the “torchbearers of change,” Omar urged them to be bold, stay connected to their land, and use their skills to bridge science and society. “Whether you move to Bengaluru or beyond, carry Kashmir in your heart and serve your people,” he said, asking them to help double small farmers’ income and build climate-smart, employment-generating enterprises.

“If you’re ready to lead, we are ready to support you,” the Chief Minister concluded. [KNT]
