Overnight Rain Ends Two-Month Dry Spell in Kashmir, Brings Relief
Kashmir: September 25, 2023: (Shaharbeen Times) After nearly two months of an unprecedented dry spell, Kashmir experienced a welcome change in weather on Monday. Overnight rain brought much-needed relief to the region, with the season’s first snowfall gracing the ski resort of Gulmarg.
In a month that saw only 20 mm of precipitation until Saturday, September in Kashmir had suffered from a significant rainfall deficiency, receiving only 55 mm compared to the usual average of 75 mm. The prolonged dry spell had raised concerns among locals, especially apple growers, as the lack of moisture had been adversely affecting crop quality across the Valley.
This year, the region witnessed unusually high summer temperatures, resulting in a heatwave that residents were unaccustomed to. On September 12, the summer capital, Srinagar, recorded a temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius, which was just shy of the all-time highest recorded temperature of 35 degrees Celsius in 1934.
The recent rainfall is a much-needed respite for both the agriculture sector and the people of Kashmir, who were eagerly awaiting relief from the prolonged dry conditions.
