Man Who Bravely Disarmed Bondi Gunman Recovering After Surgery, Family Says
The family of the man who courageously wrestled a firearm away from one of the Bondi attackers has said he is recovering after undergoing surgery and is in stable condition.
The man, identified by local media as Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner, was filmed charging towards the gunman and successfully disarming him in a moment of extraordinary bravery that likely saved many lives.
Ahmed sustained bullet injuries to his arm and hands and was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery. Doctors have informed the family that his condition is stable.
Speaking to 7News Australia, Ahmed’s cousin Mustafa praised his courage, calling him a true hero. “He is a hero, he is a hundred percent hero,” Mustafa said. “He is still in the hospital and we don’t know exactly what is happening inside, but we hope he will be fine.”
Ahmed’s selfless act has drawn widespread admiration, with people across the country hailing his courage in the face of extreme danger. A fundraising campaign launched on GoFundMe to support his recovery raised over A$200,000 within a few hours, reflecting the deep public gratitude for his bravery.
His actions during the tragic Bondi incident stand as a powerful example of courage, humanity, and self-sacrifice, reminding the world that even in moments of terror, extraordinary individuals rise to protect others.
