Spain End Argentina’s Reign, Lift FIFA World Cup 2026 with Extra-Time Winner

Shaharbeen Times Desk: Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a tense extra-time final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, ending Lionel Messi’s dream of finishing his World Cup career with back-to-back titles.

After dominating possession and creating numerous chances throughout the match, Spain finally found the breakthrough just 39 seconds into the second half of extra time. Substitute Ferran Torres calmly slotted home from close range to hand La Roja their first World Cup title in 16 years.

Argentina, reduced to 10 men late in the contest, struggled to impose themselves against Spain’s relentless pressing. Lionel Messi, playing what is widely expected to be his final FIFA World Cup match, was kept unusually quiet and had little impact as Spain’s disciplined defence denied him space throughout the game.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a series of outstanding saves to keep Argentina in the contest and prevent Spain from scoring in regulation time. However, Spain’s sustained pressure eventually paid off with Torres’ decisive strike, avoiding the uncertainty of a penalty shootout.

The victory marks Spain’s return to the summit of world football, while Argentina’s reign as world champions comes to an end in a heartbreaking finale for Messi and his teammates.

Spain celebrated a historic triumph as Ferran Torres emerged as the match-winner, while football fans across the globe witnessed what could be the final World Cup appearance of one of the sport’s greatest legends, Lionel Messi.
