Srinagar, December 5, 2024: A relentless cold wave has enveloped the Kashmir and Ladakh regions, sending temperatures plummeting to record lows. The biting cold has disrupted normal life, with people huddling indoors to escape the freezing temperatures.

Kashmir Freezes
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of -2.1°C, while the picturesque hill stations of Pahalgam and Gulmarg experienced even harsher conditions. Pahalgam, known for its pristine beauty, shivered at -5.3°C, while Gulmarg, a popular winter sports destination, recorded a bone-chilling -3.6°C.

The Zojila Pass, one of the world’s highest motorable roads, was blanketed in snow, with temperatures plunging to a frigid -18.0°C. The extreme cold has led to the closure of the pass, disrupting essential supplies to the region.

Ladakh Shivers
The twin districts of Leh and Kargil in Ladakh also faced severe cold, with temperatures dipping below -9°C. The harsh winter conditions have made life difficult for the local population, especially in remote areas.
Jammu Experiences Mild Chill
In contrast to the frigid conditions in Kashmir and Ladakh, the Jammu region experienced relatively milder temperatures. However, several districts, including Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah, recorded sub-zero temperatures, leading to widespread snowfall and icy roads.
Impact on Daily Life
The extreme cold wave has had a significant impact on daily life in the region. Schools and colleges have been closed, and public transportation has been disrupted. People have been advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the cold.
Government Response
The government has taken several measures to mitigate the impact of the cold wave. These include providing relief to the affected population, ensuring the availability of essential supplies, and clearing roads of snow.
As the cold wave continues to grip the region, authorities are urging people to stay safe and take necessary precautions to avoid health risks.
