Advisory Warns of Risks Linked to Heated Cricket Debates

Srinagar, Sep 13. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has issued an advisory for Kashmiri students studying across the country ahead of the high-voltage India-Pakistan Asia Cup cricket clash, urging them to treat the match as a sporting event and not let emotions land them in trouble.

JKSA National Convenor, Nasir Khuehami, said the association has cautioned students against making social media posts or engaging in heated debates that could invite disciplinary or legal consequences. He noted that in the past, several Kashmiri students were detained, arrested, or booked over their reactions to Indo-Pak matches, which adversely impacted their education and future prospects.

“Students must focus on the very reason they are away from home, which is to pursue education and career opportunities. They should never allow a cricket match to derail their studies or tarnish the sacrifices made by their families. Fathers toil, brothers take loans, sisters sell jewelry, and mothers pray day and night so that students can secure a better future,” Khuehami said.

The advisory underscored that the emotions surrounding an India-Pakistan match often carry political and nationalistic undertones, making students vulnerable to backlash. “We strongly advise students to refrain from posting, debating, or indulging in any activity on social media that could attract unnecessary attention. They must remain vigilant on campuses and in their accommodations, prioritizing their safety and dignity,” the statement added.

Khuehami emphasized that sports should foster peace, unity, and camaraderie rather than division and hostility. “Games are not merely entertainment. They symbolize discipline, harmony, and brotherhood. Let this contest be a celebration of sportsmanship and not a cause of conflict,” he remarked.

Recalling the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack earlier this year, the JKSA pointed out that despite Kashmiris uniting in condemnation of the violence, Kashmiri students in other parts of India still faced hostility. It added that the upcoming clash will not be viewed in isolation as a game but will inevitably be tied to political and emotional narratives.

“In this sensitive backdrop, we once again urge all Kashmiri students to maintain peace and harmony, and to avoid any action that could jeopardize their future,” the JKSA reiterated.
