According to opinion polls in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party is set to keep control of India’s most populous state after a month-long voting process completed on Monday.
Holding on to Uttar Pradesh would increase Modi’s chances of gaining a third consecutive term in office in the 2024 general election, as well as his image as the country’s most popular politician in decades. BJP and its allies are expected to win anywhere between 211 to 277 seats out of 403 in the state, a comfortable majority, according to four polls carried out for new channels. On Thursday, the votes will be counted. In the last state election five years ago, the BJP and its allies won more over 300 seats.
In other four states, Kejriwal’s Aam Admi Party that rules Delhi is projected to win in Punjab, while the race is tight but slightly in somewhat in favour of the BJP in Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand.
