Srinagar, June 20 : As Kashmir gears up for the annual Amarnath Yatra scheduled to begin in the first week of July, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has intensified its deployment and security arrangements across the Valley, particularly focusing on Srinagar and Ganderbal districts. The force has been lauded for its sustained efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the region, especially during times of heightened sensitivities.

Yatri Bhavans in Pantha Chowk and Baltal have been placed under layered security cover, with CRPF personnel stationed at critical points, managing surveillance, crowd control, and emergency response mechanisms. The deployment has been enhanced this year, considering the importance of the pilgrimage and the vital need to ensure the safety of the yatris (pilgrims).

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior CRPF officer told the news agency Kashmir News Trust: “This year’s yatra is not just a religious event, it holds the key to reviving the tourism economy of Kashmir. We are working round the clock to ensure that every pilgrim feels safe and secure. Our personnel are stationed at all vital locations, from highways to the base camps, and are fully prepared to handle any situation.”

The official added that the CRPF has been working in close coordination with J&K Police and other security agencies to strengthen the intelligence grid and enhance quick response capabilities. Regular mock drills, area domination exercises, and the installation of modern surveillance systems are already underway.

Over the past few years, the CRPF has emerged as a backbone of the security setup in Kashmir, dealing with diverse challenges. Its presence during previous yatras has played a crucial role in avoiding untoward incidents, and this year, the force is further enhancing its vigilance.

“CRPF is not just a force on the ground, it’s a reassurance for the common people and the pilgrims alike,” the official added. “We understand how vital this pilgrimage is, not only for religious harmony but also for the economy of the region, especially after a slump in tourist footfall due to the Pahalgam attack.”

The Amarnath Yatra, which draws lakhs of devotees from across India, is expected to see a significant rise in participation this year, provided security arrangements continue to instill confidence among prospective pilgrims.

Locals in Srinagar and Ganderbal have also acknowledged the efforts of CRPF in maintaining a peaceful environment conducive to hosting such large-scale events. Stakeholders in the tourism sector are optimistic that a peaceful and well-managed Yatra could serve as a turning point for the industry, which has been grappling with challenges due to political instability and periodic unrest.

As preparations enter the final stage, the message is clear: “CRPF remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, incident-free Yatra that not only upholds religious sentiments but also contributes to restoring the Valley’s image as a welcoming destination for all.” [KNT]
