SRINAGAR: At least four cattle have died and dozens of others have been affected by Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Nawabagh village of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, prompting residents to seek urgent intervention from the Animal Husbandry Department.

Residents told Kashmir Life that the disease had been spreading among cattle in the village for more than two weeks, with several livestock owners reporting infections. The four deaths include two cattle belonging to Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo, one owned by Bashir Ahmad Mir and another by Ghulam Nabi Mir.

Villagers expressed concern over the spread of the infection, alleging that no official from the administration or the concerned department had visited the area despite the difficulties faced by livestock owners

Lumpy Skin Disease is a contagious viral infection that primarily affects cattle and spreads through biting insects and direct contact. The disease can cause fever, skin nodules, discharge from the eyes and nose, and a decline in milk production. In recent months, LSD has affected dairy cattle in several parts of Ganderbal district, with farmers reporting widespread infections and animal deaths. The Animal Husbandry Department has issued advisories, urging livestock owners to isolate infected animals, while undertaking vaccination and vector-control measures in affected areas, including Shallabugh, Sherpathri and Tulamulla.
