Says 2,500 Rescued in South Kashmir in 24 Hours; Contingency Plans Activated, Embankments Reinforced as Rains Swell Jhelum Levels

Srinagar, Sep 3 : Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Wednesday said that nearly 2,500 people have been rescued from different parts of south Kashmir over the past 24 hours amid continuous rainfall and rising water levels.

Div Com Garg told media persons, as per news agency JKNS, “Since yesterday, heavy rains have lashed south Kashmir, while central Kashmir too is witnessing downpours. Water levels are rising continuously at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh. However, as per IMD, the levels are likely to recede now.”

He added, “Contingency plans by the administration and the Irrigation & Flood Control Department are in place. We are here at Barzulla, closely monitoring the situation. Reinforcements and sandbags are being put wherever necessary, and the process will be completed within the next two to three hours.”

Div Com further said that all Deputy Commissioners are supervising evacuation drives across districts. “DC Srinagar is on the ground as well. Emergency operation centres are fully functional, and we are hopeful the situation will improve in the next few hours. The forecast suggests rainfall may decrease, which would allow water levels to recede, a positive sign toward normalcy,” he added. (JKNS)
