Srinagar: Farooq Dar, Co-chairman of the Kashmir Economic Alliance, has called for an extension of summer vacations in the Valley, specifically for students up to the 6th grade, citing the ongoing severe heatwave. He highlighted the lack of basic amenities in schools and school buses, which is causing significant problems for young children.
In a press release, Farooq Dar pointed out that most government and private schools lack essential facilities like cooling system fans, potable water, and proper ventilation, which can pose serious health risks to students during hot weather. He warned that children could suffer from dehydration, dizziness, and fatigue in schools due to the intense heat.
Furthermore, school buses also suffer from poor ventilation, exacerbating the discomfort for children during their commutes.
Other problems faced by students during the severe heatwave include the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, nausea, and headaches. These issues are particularly concerning for younger children who have lower heat tolerance. Farooq Dar urged the government to take serious note of the situation and implement immediate measures to ensure the health and safety of students. He stated, “It’s time the government prioritizes the well-being of our young children and protects them from the adverse effects of this severe heat.”
He further added that if schools are not equipped with air cooling systems, proper hydration facilities, and adequate medical aid, extending the summer vacation remains the only viable solution. This would allow students to avoid extreme temperatures and remain safe at home.
