New Delhi, Apr 7, KNT: In a move that will impact millions of households, the Union government on Monday raised the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 50. The hike applies to both subsidised and non-subsidised consumers, Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri confirmed.

Under the revised pricing, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana—who receive LPG connections at subsidised rates—will now pay Rs 553 for a 14.2-kg cylinder in the national capital, up from the previous Rs 503. For general consumers, the same cylinder will now cost Rs 853.

This is the first revision in domestic LPG prices since March last year, when rates were slashed by Rs 100. LPG prices differ across states due to varying local taxes.

The increase in household LPG prices follows a marginal reduction in commercial LPG cylinder rates last week. The price of these cylinders, used widely by restaurants, eateries, and other commercial establishments, was cut by Rs 41.

In a separate development, the government also announced an increase in excise duties on petrol and diesel. As per an official notification, excise duty on petrol has been raised to Rs 13 per litre, and on diesel to Rs 10 per litre. The revised duties will come into effect from April 8, 2025.

However, the hike will not affect retail fuel prices at the pump. Authorities clarified that oil marketing companies will absorb the increased duty. This has been made possible due to the recent decline in international crude oil prices, which had created headroom for adjustment without burdening consumers. [KNT]
