Srinagar, June 25. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, V.K. Birdi, Wednesday visited Pahalgam to assess the security preparedness ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, which is set to begin in the first week of next month. During his visit, he interacted with senior officers and reviewed the deployment arrangements on the ground.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the visit, IGP Birdi said that compared to last year, a more robust, multilayered security mechanism has been put in place to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the pilgrimage.

“All security measures have been thoroughly planned and implemented. We have distributed the security setup across different zones to ensure effective coverage and quick response in case of any situation,” Birdi said.

IGP, according to the news agency Kashmir News Trust emphasized the importance of public cooperation, noting that successful management of the Yatra requires support from both security forces and the general public. “People’s cooperation is crucial for the safe and incident-free conduct of the Yatra,” he added.

When asked about the preparedness for emergencies, the IGP highlighted that mock drills are being conducted at multiple locations across the region to test the readiness of police and other forces in responding to contingencies like natural disasters, accidents, or security threats.

“The drills help us fine-tune coordination among different agencies and ensure we are fully prepared to meet any emergency,” he said, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for the pilgrims. [KNT]
