Srinagar, Feb 20: Aspirants looking at foreign medical colleges for pursuing MBBS beware: the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that no MBBS in any medical college abroad would be considered valid without taking a NEET-UG exam. The ruling aimed at maintaining a standard of medical education and quality of healthcare delivery reaffirming the National Medical Commission (NMC) rule that mandates NEET-UG for pursuing undergraduate medical courses in any medical college, nationally or internationally.NEET-UG became mandatory after NMC issued a ruling in this regard in 2018.The SC underlined that the NMC ruling does not violate any statutory provision, Obviously, with open eyes, after the amended regulations came into effect if any candidate chose to obtain admission in a foreign institution for pursuing a course leading to a primary medical qualification, they cannot seek for an exemption from the regulations; which lays down essential eligibility criteria for practising medicine within the country. This does not restrict their right to practice anywhere outside India,” the bench of B R Gavai and K Vinod Chandran said.

As a result of this ruling, the aspirants must not fall into the trap of pursuing a degree without qualifying for the mandatory exam.

This would render their degrees invalid in India.
