Srinagar, Feb 13: Former MLA Bandipora, Usman Majid today expressed concerns over what he called “political diversions” by the incumbent government from real issues, emphasizing that the focus should remain on good governance and the restoration of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir.Commenting on the voices seeking liquor ban in J&K, the former MLA Bandipora acknowledged it as a ‘positive step’ but suggested that such issues should not be used as distractions. If the government wants to ban alcohol in Jammu & Kashmir, they should take a clear decision instead of creating confusion. The bill has been proposed by a member as a private members bill, so the government must act decisively,” he as per Greater Kashmir said on the sidelines of an event held in Srinagar.Majid’s remarks come amid ongoing political debates in the region, with leaders divided over governance issues, electoral strategies, and the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape.Replying to recent interview of chief minister Omar Abdullah, Majid said “We are closely watching Omar Abdullah. He is making big claims, but we will see whether he delivers or merely creates more diversions”.He criticized Omar Abdullah’s stance on the Union Territory (UT) framework, recalling that the National Conference leader had initially refused to contest elections, calling the Chief Minister’s post in a UT equivalent to that of a municipal president. “Despite knowing the limited powers under the UT structure, he still chose to contest. Now, merely raising slogans won’t change anything,” Majid asserted. He at the occasion praised efforts to encourage women’s participation in sports, particularly initiatives that recognize and felicitate young female athletes in Jammu and Kashmir. “Empowering girls through sports is crucial, and we fully support such events that promote women’s empowerment,” he added.
