Officials said the victims were identified as Arshid Ahmad Mir and Basit Shaikh, both in their mid-20s and residents of New Colony Pakharpora. The incident occurred when the duo was reportedly engulfed by a sudden collapse of sand, leaving them with multiple and grievous injuries.

Local residents rushed the injured men to a nearby primary health centre at Keller, from where they were referred to SMHS Hospital for advanced medical care. Despite sustained efforts by doctors, Arshid Ahmad Mir succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the hospital.

After completion of medico legal formalities, the body was handed over to his family for last rites, officials said.

The condition of the second injured youth remains critical, and he is currently under intensive medical supervision. Doctors said the next 24 hours are crucial.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated proceedings to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the accident. Further details are awaited.

The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the area, once again highlighting the risks associated with unsafe excavation and handling of loose earth in rural parts of the Kashmir Valley.
