Srinagar, Jan 8 In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking, Srinagar police seized 8 kilograms of heroin during a routine checkpoint operation on Tuesday night.

Two individuals were arrested in connection with the case, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain, revealed this during a press conference on Wednesday.

He said police post Qamarwari had erected a checkpoint near Barthana, where a police team led by Sub Inspector Imtiyaz Ahmad stopped a Sumo vehicle bearing registration number JK05D 1837.

“The arrested individuals, identified as Anas Ajaz Awan and Zahid Ahmed Sheikh, both residents of Karnah in Kupwara district, were found in possession of the illicit substance.”

SSP said that the value of the seizure in the international market is over Rs 32 crores.

He said during the investigation it came to the fore that this heroin had entered Kashmir from Pakistan and there is a network that has been identified.

“Whosoever engages in drug peddling will face the wrath of the law,” SSP Imtiyaz Hussain as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said.

“Strict action is being taken against drug peddlers,” SSP Hussain emphasized, warning that anyone involved in drug trafficking will face severe legal consequences. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to rooting out the drug menace from the region.

In response to a question, SSP Hussain disclosed another case involving a man booked for impersonating a government official. The accused allegedly attempted to manipulate a woman to secure her husband’s release who had been arrested on charges of drug peddling from custody.

The SSP urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or criminal impersonation. “We remain steadfast in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community,” he said. [KNT]
