Srinagar, Sep 3 : After continuous rainfall since the late afternoon, South Kashmir districts including Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian witnessed a halt in showers at around 5:45 PM, bringing temporary relief to residents.
While Central and North Kashmir, including Srinagar, remained largely dry after late afternoon, the southern districts received moderate to heavy rainfall from 4 PM onwards. The downpour stopped after an hour, easing concerns for the time being.
Officials told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the water level in the river Jhelum has been rising gradually. A MeT official noted that the levels are expected to recede during late hours if there is no further rainfall in South Kashmir.
Meanwhile, with flood fears resurfacing, locals in vulnerable areas have begun shifting their household items to upper floors. In several markets of Srinagar city, shopkeepers were seen moving their merchandise to safer places to avoid damage.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as people brace for the possibility of rising waters. [KNT]
