Jammu, Oct 12: KNT: Record-breaking rainfall battered Jammu yesterday, leaving one person dead and a woman missing in separate flood-related incidents, while flash floods, waterlogging and landslides damaged vehicles, inundated homes and shops and disrupted traffic across several parts of the city.
Jammu recorded 185.6 mm of rainfall in three hours, surpassing the previous October record of 160 mm set in 1955, according to officials quoted in media reports. The downpour began around 8:30 am and brought the city to a standstill in several localities, with roads submerged and rainwater entering residential and commercial premises.
In Raipur Domana, a 27-year-old woman went missing after she was reportedly swept away by floodwaters while attempting to save her husband, who had gone to move their parked car. The man managed to save himself, while police, local residents and State Disaster Response Force teams joined the search for the woman.
In a separate incident, the body of a man suspected to have drowned in a flooded stream was recovered from the Domana area on Sunday evening. His identity and the exact circumstances of his death were yet to be established in the reports available.
The heavy rain also triggered landslides along the Panjtirthi-Sidrah and Sidrah-Nagrota stretches, affecting traffic on key routes. Personnel and machinery were deployed to clear debris and restore movement. Waterlogging was reported in several localities, including Panjtirthi, Nagrota, Roop Nagar, Janipur, Dogra Chowk, Durga Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Raipur Domana.
The intensity of the rainfall also raised concerns over the cityβs drainage and flood-management arrangements, as several neighbourhoods experienced inundation. The latest spell has once again exposed the disruption that extreme rainfall can cause to urban transport, homes and essential movement. [KNT]
