Tarouba, July 29: Babar Azam’s return as Pakistan’s Test captain ended in disappointment as the West Indies registered a commanding 90-run victory in the opening Test at Tarouba to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Chasing a target of 211, Pakistan’s batting line-up crumbled for just 120 in 40.4 overs. Fast bowler Jayden Seales starred for the hosts with a brilliant five-wicket haul, while the West Indies pace attack dominated throughout the final innings.
Earlier, Pakistan had hoped to wrap up the West Indies innings quickly on the fourth day after reducing the hosts to 93/7. However, Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach frustrated the visitors with a crucial 61-run partnership for the eighth wicket, helping West Indies post 238 in their second innings. Mohammad Abbas claimed a five-wicket haul for Pakistan.
The defeat marks Pakistan’s eighth consecutive away Test loss, extending their worst-ever losing streak on foreign soil. West Indies will now head into the second and final Test with the opportunity to seal the series.
