PIB Media Tour to Chennai
Chennai, September 14, 2026: During the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Srinagar Region’s media tour to Chennai, the visiting journalists explored the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu during a museum visit, where they came across the traditional Agraharam House.
The visit offered an opportunity to understand how these traditional homes were once much more than places of residence. They served as important social spaces where people from villages gathered, interacted and exchanged information.
Agraharam House: The Wi-Fi of the Past
In today’s digital age, people rely on Wi-Fi, mobile phones and social media to share information. In earlier times, traditional gathering spaces such as Agraharam House served a similar social purpose. Villagers would sit together, discuss important matters, exchange news and pass information from one person to another.
In this sense, these houses can be viewed as the “Wi-Fi of the past”—places where communities connected, conversations travelled and information spread without modern technology.
With their distinctive architecture, spacious verandas, courtyards and traditional living spaces, Agraharam houses reflect the cultural identity and social traditions of Tamil Nadu.
The museum visit provided the journalists from Jammu and Kashmir with a valuable opportunity to appreciate India’s diverse heritage and understand how traditional architecture once played an important role in connecting communities.
The visit was part of the PIB-organised media tour to Chennai, aimed at familiarising journalists with the cultural, historical and developmental significance of Tamil Nadu.
