Ceasefire Agreement Between Israel and Hezbollah to Begin Wednesday. In a significant development, a ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah will take effect on Wednesday. The agreement, brokered by the United States and France, was announced by U.S. President Joe Biden. The truce aims to end a deadly conflict along the Israeli-Lebanese border that erupted after the Gaza war last year, claiming thousands of lives. President Biden, speaking from the White House, confirmed that the ceasefire had been approved by Israel’s security cabinet with a decisive 10-1 vote. He also held discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The ceasefire is set to commence at 4 a.m. local time (0200 GMT). “This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities,” Biden stated. He emphasized that Hezbollah and other militant groups would no longer be allowed to threaten Israel’s security. The agreement includes provisions for civilians on both sides to safely return to their homes. Over the next 60 days, Israel will gradually withdraw its forces, while the Lebanese army will take control of border territories to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its infrastructure. Alia Ibrahim, a mother from Qaaqaiyat al-Snawbar who had fled to Beirut three months ago, expressed cautious optimism. “I hope Israeli officials stay committed to the deal,” she said. This ceasefire marks a critical step towards peace and stability in the region.
