Zainapora, Aug 7 : Following the Jammu and Kashmir government’s ban on 25 books allegedly promoting secessionist ideology, police officials in Zainapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district carried out inspections at local bookshops to ensure compliance with the order.

Official sources said that a team led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and the Station House Officer (SHO) Zainapora visited several bookshops in the town on Thursday. The officials checked shelves and inventories to verify that none of the banned titles were being kept for sale.

The banned books, declared forfeited under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, reportedly include titles by authors such as Arundhati Roy, A.G. Noorani, Sumantra Bose, and others, which the government said contain material that “excites secessionism and endangers the sovereignty of India.”

During the inspection, no banned material was found, and the shopkeepers were reportedly cautioned against stocking or distributing any of the proscribed books. The action comes amid a broader move by the administration to curb literature deemed to pose a threat to public order and national integrity. [KNT]
