Kohima: The controversial law AFSPA that gives sweeping powers to security forces has been extended for another six months in Nagaland, where the army is conducting a court of inquiry into an ambush that went horribly wrong on December 4.

The Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act, or AFSPA, gives immense powers to the military to operate freely anywhere that has been declared a “disturbed area”; no military personnel in an area where AFSPA is in force can be prosecuted without the centre’s sanction.

Nagaland’s rights groups and even the state government have been demanding the centre to withdraw AFSPA. (NDTV)
