Shopian, October 24, In a significant achievement towards ensuring justice for victims of sexual offences, Shopian Police has secured the conviction of two accused involved in the sexual assault of a minor girl. The case was registered at Police Station Zainapora under FIR No. 150/2022 for offences punishable under Sections 363 IPC and 3/4, 17 of the POCSO Act.
After a detailed trial, the Hon’ble Principal Sessions Judge Shopian pronounced judgment today, convicting Yawer Ahmad Sheikh, son of Gh. Mohammad Sheikh, and Mehraj Ahmad Dar, son of Ab. Gaffar Dar, both residents of Khawajapora Chitragam, Shopian.
Upon deliberation on the quantum of punishment, the Hon’ble Court awarded the following sentences:
Under Section 363 IPC: Rigorous Imprisonment for 5 years and a fine of ₹10,000, and in default of payment of fine, Simple Imprisonment for one month was given to Yawer Ahmad Sheikh. He was also awarded Rigorous Imprisonment for 10 years and a fine of ₹20,000, and in default of payment of fine, Simple Imprisonment for three months. Both sentences shall run concurrently, making the effective sentence 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
The Court sentenced Mehraj Ahmad Dar to Rigorous Imprisonment for 5 years and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 for his role in the offence.
