Srinagar, Mar 3: The Dalgate Bridge over Chunth-Kul on the Khanyar-Hazratbal Road in the Kashmir capital Srinagar has shown alarming signs of structural distress, raising concerns about its stability and potential hazards for commuters. Experts have been urged to conduct an immediate structural assessment as visible gaps in the bridge’s columns and footpath indicate possible deterioration.
This pile-founded viaduct with trestle-type piers as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust (KNT) has developed noticeable gaps between its columns, a sign of progressive structural displacement that could compromise its load-bearing capacity. Additionally, the 1.5-meter-wide footpath has developed visible fractures at multiple locations, further fueling fears among pedestrians and motorists. Commuters have also reported significant vibrations while crossing the bridge, suggesting possible dynamic instability.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 13.38 crore, the bridge was completed five months ahead of schedule by JKPCC and inaugurated in 2012 by then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. However, with over a decade of service, concerns are mounting that without expert intervention, the bridge could deteriorate further, leading to a catastrophic failure.
Structural engineers and bridge safety experts have been urged to inspect and evaluate the bridge for potential shear failure, settlement issues, or material fatigue. “If left unchecked, the progressive widening of column gaps may compromise the integrity of the entire superstructure, posing a severe public safety risk.
