Shopian encounter Update: Three militants killed, one surrendered

Shopian May 06 (KNO): Three militants were killed and one surrendered in an encounter that raged between government forces and militants at Kanigam village in Imam Sahib area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday.

A senior police officer told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that three militants have been killed whose identification is being ascertained while as operation is on in the area.

He said that one militant surrendered, however, the other three militants turned down repeated surrender offers given to them by government forces.

Earlier, an official said that a joint team of Police, Army’s 44 RR and CRPF launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

Pertinently, 43 militants have been killed in J&K so far this year and most of them belong to Shopian district.

Meanwhile as a precautionary measure internet services have been snapped in district—(KNO)

Shopian, May 06 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday said that four newly recruited local militants were trapped in an encounter Kanigam area in South Kashmir’s Shopian district and efforts were being made to persuade them to surrender.

Police, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that the newly recruited militants belonged to Al-Badr militant outfit.

In Tweet, Kashmir Zone Police said that police and security forces were trying their best to persuade the trapped militants to surrender.

“Four newly recruited local #terrorists of Al-Badr terror outfit trapped in #Kanigam area of #Shopian. Exercising maximum restraint, Police & security forces are trying their best to persuade them to #surrender. @JmuKmrPolice,” Kashmir Zone police Tweeted.

Earlier, an encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Kanigam village.

An official said that a joint team of Police, Army’s 44 RR and CRPF launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

A senior police officer also confirmed the exchange of fire between forces and militants.

As per the sources, three to four militants are believed to be trapped in the area—(KNO)
