Senior PTI leader Imran Khan’s close aide Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been “arrested” by the Islamabad police in the early hours of Thursday and transferred to an “undisclosed location”.
A video shared by the party on Twitter shows plain-clothed men taking Qureshi away, with him waving at party workers before departing from the location where he was detained.
Pakistan is on the edge of defaulting on its financial obligations. In 2022, climate change led to severe floods in the country and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affected food and energy supply chains. Both events exacerbated Pakistan’s economic difficulties. But volatile politics have hamstrung any coherent government response.
Pakistan is simultaneously trying to cope with several economic and political crises. Pakistan’s dysfunctional political system and self-serving elites are largely to blame. Ousted former prime minister Imran Khan continues to battle the weak and disparate political coalition that replaced him in the courts and on the streets and now finally arrested.
