27-year-old woman died by suicide in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, reportedly due to torture over dowry by her husband and in-laws. The deceased, Ridhanya, was the daughter of Annadurai, who runs a garment company. She married 28-year-old Kavin Kumar in April this year. According to reports, the marriage involved a dowry of 100 sovereigns (800 g) of gold jewellery and a Volvo car worth Rs 70 lakh,On Sunday, Ridhanya left home, saying she was going to a temple in Mondipalayam. On the way, she reportedly stopped her car and consumed fumigant pesticide tablets. Locals alerted the police after noticing a car parked in the area for a long time. Upon inspection, police found Ridhanya dead inside, with foam at her mouth.According to sources, she had sent seven audio messages on WhatsApp to her father before her death, in which she apologised for her decision and spoke about being unable to bear the alleged abuse. In her message she said that her parents might doubt her but she wasn’t lying. “Everyone around me is acting, and I don’t understand why I’m silent or become like this,” she said, adding that she couldn’t carry on like this anymore.“I don’t want to be a burden to you all my life. This time I did not make any mistake. I don’t like this life. They are assaulting me mentally while he is torturing me physically,” she stated in a message, “I don’t like this life. I’m unable to continue my life.”“You and mom are my world. Until my last breath you have been my hope, but I hurt you badly. You are unable to openly say this still you are not able to see me like this. I can understand your suffering. I’m sorry father everything is over. I’m leaving,” she said.In her message she said that her parents might doubt her but she wasn’t lying. “Everyone around me is acting, and I don’t understand why I’m silent or become like this,” she said, adding that she couldn’t carry on like this anymore.“I don’t want to be a burden to you all my life. I’m leaving,” she said.Ridhanya’s body was sent to the District Government Hospital for post-mortem. Her relatives gathered outside the hospital, demanding justice. Her father, Annadurai, demanded justice, alleging that his daughter was deceived into marrying into a family that pretended to be respectable.“They cheated us by saying they were a good family,” he said, recounting the repeated physical and mental torture his daughter had endured. You will tear up if you hear what she said. She had suffered that much physical and mental torture,” he told mediapersons, visibly shaken. Ridhanya had returned to her parental home just 15 days after the wedding, he said. “I told her that it is a new family and I asked her to adjust,” he admitted with regret. He said Ridhanya had then requested him to speak to her mother-in-law. The woman visited them, apologised for her son’s behaviour and promised it would not happen again. But within 20 days of returning to her in-laws’ house, Ridhanya came back once more — this time even more broken, Annadurai said. She had once again suffered severe mental and physical torture,” he said, adding that even then, he asked her to adjust. That’s when she confided that the family behaved differently with him around.According to Annadurai, “They had locked her up inside and told her that it was for my safety.” He said they questioned her about nearly 500 sovereigns (4.5 kilos) of gold and compared their dowry to others, saying “other families have given Rs 100 crore for the groom to start businesses.”asked her not to go and to stay here,” Annadurai said “No other child should suffer like my kid. I want justice,” he said.Police have registered a case and arrested her husband Kavin Kumar, father-in-law Eswaramoorthy, and mother-in-law Chithradevi. Further investigation is underway
