Omar Abdullah Meets Amit Shah in First Delhi Visit as J&K CM, Pushes for Statehood Restoration

Newly elected Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday during his first visit to New Delhi after assuming office. The visit follows a recent terror attack in Gangangir, Ganderbal, where seven civilians, including a doctor, were brutally killed just three days ago.

Abdullah’s meeting with Shah holds significant importance as the police forces in Jammu and Kashmir have been under the Union Home Ministry’s control since the region’s reorganisation into a Union Territory in 2019.

During his stay, the chief minister is expected to hold further discussions with central leaders, including an anticipated meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His National Conference party recently secured a sweeping victory in the J&K assembly elections, winning 42 out of 90 seats.

In a notable move during his first cabinet meeting, Abdullah’s government passed a resolution urging the central government to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in its original form. The resolution is viewed as a crucial step towards restoring constitutional rights and preserving the region’s unique identity.

With cabinet backing, Abdullah has been tasked with advancing this cause during his engagements with the prime minister and other central authorities. The resolution also received approval from Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, further strengthening the push for statehood restoration.
