OMCs Slash Petrol and Diesel Prices by ₹2 Per Litre
State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have decided to reduce the prices of petrol and diesel by approximately ₹2 per litre, effective from 6 am on Friday. Following the adjustment, petrol prices in the national capital will drop to ₹94.72 per litre from the current ₹96.72. Similarly, in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, petrol will cost ₹104.21, ₹103.94, and ₹100.75 per litre, respectively, down by ₹2.10, ₹2.09, and ₹1.88 per litre from the previous rates.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced the price revision on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. The ministry stated that OMCs have informed about the price changes across the country.
According to the ministry’s tweet, diesel prices in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai will be ₹87.62, ₹92.15, ₹90.76, and ₹92.34 per litre, respectively, with a reduction of ₹2, ₹2.12, ₹2, and ₹1.9 per litre.
The reduction in fuel prices is expected to stimulate consumer spending and reduce operating costs for more than 5.8 million heavy goods vehicles, 60 million cars, and 270 million two-wheelers running on diesel. The move is also likely to increase disposable income, boost tourism and travel industries, control inflation, and reduce expenses for farmers on tractor operations and pump sets.
The price cut precedes the anticipated announcement of poll dates for the upcoming general elections by the Election Commission of India. This move, along with other recent relief measures, is aimed at providing relief to citizens before the implementation of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls.
