A total of 143 Opposition MPs were suspended from the Parliament for unruly behaviour, prompting protests. The suspension followed a demand by the Opposition for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Lok Sabha security breach incident on December 13.
Can speak against government, not India’: Shah
Mr. Shah explains that the laws mandate audio-visual recordings of rape victims, police accountability has been upped by mandating keeping a record of arrested people in every police station and that no court is allowed to dismiss a case without hearing victim’s statement. He adds that sedition has been changed to making it criminal to speak against India and not the ruling government.
“This nation’s security is supreme. Anyone can criticise the government, including ours. BNS Bill does not talk about government but the nation’s sovereignty, unity and separatism,” says Mr. Shah. He adds that the laws have brought the crimes against humans at higher priority before the government and that certain crimes have been made gender-neutral to include male victims.
If your mind is of Italy, you will never understand’: Amit Shah’s jibe in Lok Sabha
“For the first time, laws are going to be made according to the spirit of our Constitution under the leadership of Modi ji. I am proud to have changed these three laws after 150 years. Some people used to say that we do not understand them. I tell them that if you keep your mind as an Indian, then you will understand. But if your mind is of Italy, you will never understand,” Amit Shah’s jibe at Gandhis in Lok Sabha.
