PHE workers face challenges with frozen pipes & gear shortage

Srinagar, Dec 30: As Kashmir battles freezing temperatures, workers of the Jal Shakti Department face significant challenges in restoring water supply, with frozen pipes disrupting services. These difficulties are compounded by concerns over a shortage of essential winter gear.Kashmir’s subzero temperatures during the 40-day “Chillai Kalan” have caused widespread freezing of water pipes, disrupting water supplies in several areas. The Jal Shakti Department has deployed teams working tirelessly from dawn to dusk to restore services. However, some employees have raised concerns about inadequate protective gear, which they say exacerbates the difficulty of working in freezing conditions.Gh Mohd Khawaja, President of the Jal Shakti Division in Bandipora, expressed concern over the lack of proper uniforms and footwear, which are essential for the workers’ safety. “We are working in extreme weather conditions to ensure uninterrupted water supply. However, many of our workers lack the proper gear to handle these tough situations. We urge the authorities to address this issue and provide necessary facilities for the workers,” Khawaja said. “Our teams are doing their best, but without the right gear, the job becomes even more challenging,” he added.Another employee on the ground shared similar concerns, highlighting the added difficulty of working for hours in freezing conditions without proper winter gear. “The work itself is hard enough, but not having the right equipment makes it even more dangerous,” the worker said.However, Chief Engineer of the Jal Shakti Department, Kashmir, Braham Jyoti Sharma, dismissed these claims, stating that there is no significant issue with gear availability. “There is no shortage of gear. If any employee highlights a requirement, we address it immediately,” Sharma told Rising Kashmir.He emphasized that the department has systems in place to swiftly meet field requirements. “We are committed to ensuring that employees receive the necessary support so they can carry out their duties effectively, even under challenging conditions,” he added.
