New Delhi: In a significant political development, Member of Parliament Rohullah Mehdi announced that he has moved an impeachment motion in the Parliament under Article 124(4) of the Constitution, seeking the removal of Justice Shekhar K. Yadav, a sitting judge at the Allahabad High Court. The charges against the judge have been detailed in the notice accompanying the motion.
In a tweet, Mehdi revealed that he requires the signatures of 100 Members of Parliament to proceed with the motion. So far, over seven MPs have extended their support by signing the notice. These include prominent leaders such as AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi, Rajkumar Roat from Rajasthan, Sudhama Prasad from Bihar, and Ziau Rahman and Mohibbullah from Uttar Pradesh. Mehdi expressed his gratitude for their support.
Mehdi further mentioned that he is in talks with members of key opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress (INC), Samajwadi Party (SP), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). According to Mehdi, these parties have assured him that they will consult their leadership and are likely to support the motion.
“I am hopeful that these parties, which stand for the idea of India and uphold its principles and values, will support this important motion,” Mehdi stated.
This impeachment motion, if moved successfully, could mark a critical moment in the accountability of the judiciary and is expected to generate significant debate in the political and legal circles of the country.
