Author Salman Rushdie, whose writing led to death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was stabbed on Friday as he was about to deliver a lecture in western New York’s Chautauqua institute. Rushdie, 75, was stabbed as he was being introduced on stage.
According to New York Police, the assailant ran up onto the stage and attacked Rushdie and an interviewer. Video footage from the event showed people rushing to Rushdie’s aid.
A small group of people surrounded the author, holding up his legs, presumably to send more blood to his chest, AP reported.
The 75-year-old author has been airlifted to the hospital and the attacker is currently in police custody.
