US Vice President JD Vance has offered to meet Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei personally to discuss a negotiated settlement to the war, The Washington Post reported Thursday, citing a US official familiar with the negotiations. Vance sent Rezaei a letter last week focused on the national interests of both countries in negotiations, according to the report. The official said Vance stressed that Washington’s central interest was ensuring Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. The vice president described Iran’s interests as rebuilding its war- and sanctions-hit economy and preserving its national sovereignty, while also conveying that Tehran needed to provide representatives empowered to discuss nuclear issues. The Trump administration views Rezaei, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as the essential point of contact in Tehran and the only person who could build a consensus behind an agreement to halt Iran’s nuclear program, the Post reported.
