Srinagar, Mar 26 In a move that has triggered outrage among poor residents, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has snapped electricity connections in several areas of Srinagar over pending dues as low as Rs 1000, leaving many families in darkness during the holy month of Ramadan.

Residents from Kral Khud, Haba Kadal, Nai Sarak, Ganpatyar, Dukan Sangeen, and other areas have alleged that despite their financial hardships, the power department has shown no leniency. Many of them owe between Rs 1000 and Rs 1500, yet their power supply was disconnected without being given adequate time to clear the dues.

“I paid half of my bill on Monday, but the very next day, they cut my electricity, insisting that I pay the full amount,” a local told the news agency Kashmir News Trust, expressing his frustration over the rigid approach of KPDCL.

The affected families, already struggling with high living costs, say they are unable to afford hefty power bills but expected some relief during the sacred month. “Instead of showing compassion in Ramadan, they have pushed us into darkness,” said another resident, appealing to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and provide respite to the poor.

The disconnections have sparked criticism, with many urging the authorities to adopt a humane approach and give struggling households more time to settle their dues. However, KPDCL officials have defended their action, stating that non-payment of bills impacts revenue collection and power supply management. [KNT]
